TVA Rules for our League Tournaments

Goals:

For the younger age groups (3-4 and lower levels of the 5-6) the goals of our TVA tournaments are to first encourage the correct playing sequence (Pass-Set-Spike).

For the teams advanced enough to already do three contacts on a fairly consistent basis regular USAV rules will apply.

3-4th Grade Rules

Serving:

  • All players are allowed a “Mulligan Serve” if they miss their 1st serve only. This will be a 2nd chance serve. If they miss both, they have lost that turn of service.  If you make your first serve and score, then miss your second serve, your turn at service is over for that rotation.
  • Players may start at the 1st cone or yellow line for serving, if they make three serves in a row over and score they must move back to the 2nd cone, if they make three in a row over they move back to the 3rd cone, if they make three in a row they must move back to the 4th cone, if they make three in a row over they move back to the 5th cone (baseline) .
  • This is for under or overhand serving. Foot faults will be called. Stepping on or over the service line prior to contact is a foot fault.

Three Contacts

  • Teams may not send the ball over on the 1st or 2nd contact, if they do, they will lose the point and it will be the other teams serve.
  • We are stressing learning and enforcing three contacts immediately to get the players moving.  Even if sending it over on the 1st or 2nd contact is an “accident”, it is a loss of the point.
  • In all games the coach will give 1 tally point (separate from the scoreboard points) when their team gets threes contacts but does not go over, and 2 tally points for three contacts that go over and are in bounds, total tally points at the end of the tournament wins.
  • Coaches will record these and turn in the results to the table at the end of the tournament.

Awards

  • For all 3-4 grade divisions there are two different awards given out
    • Overall Match/Game Champion and sometimes 2nd and 3rd place
    • Three Contact Champion, runner-up and sometimes 3rd place

5-6th Grade Rules

Serving:

  • Navy Division will not have a step-in rule
  • Orange and White Divisions  will have a step in rule
  • This is for under or overhand serving. Foot faults will be called. Stepping on or over the service line prior to contact is a foot fault.

Three Contacts

  • Teams in Orange and/or White divisions only will use the three contact rule to encourage correct play.
  • Teams may not send the ball over on the 1st or 2nd contact, if they do, they will lose the point and it will be the other teams serve.
